Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Same as #1379. The image shows an unidentified grey-haired man, possibly John C. Fremont. He wears a civilian suit and looks to his left of the camera. Inscriptions on recto: "I am truly yours John C. Fremont" and "Copyrighted, July '90. by Doremus, Paterson, N.J." Inscription on verso: "L. H. Doremus Photographer Solar Phot's Crayons etc. 240 Main Street Paterson, N.J. Negatives kept--Copies can be had."
