At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image shows General Steven seated in the center of seven of his staff standing around him. They are on a house porch. Imprint on recto "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by M. B. Brady, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Disctrict of Coumbia." Photographers imprint on verso: "Brady's Album Gallery. No. 163. General Stevens and Staff, Beaufort, S. C. The Photographs of this series were taken directly from nature, at considerable cost. Warning is therefore given that legal proceedings will be at one instituted against any party infringing on the copyright."
