Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bust portrait of William T. Sherman with one star. 9th plate tintype in 6th plate Union Case. Descriptive tag mistakenly identifies this photograph as: "Ferrotype of Gen. Phil. Henry Sheridan Commander of the Army of Shenandoah in 1864." A 6th plate tintype portrait of an infant girl was discovered underneath Sherman in the case, and was treated as #2. Her clothes have been colored pink. CASE: Union case showing cross cannons over a pyramid of cannonballs. An American flag appears on either side of the center image. A union shield appears in each of the lower corners. (See Clifford & Michele Krainik, Union Cases, #112.) Case thickness 2.6 cm.
