Slidell introduces a Senator from California to Debray (possibly a representative of Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian) to discuss plans regarding the colonization of Sonora, Mexico.
John Slidell served as United States Representative from Louisiana 1843-1846, Minister to Mexico 1845, Senator 1853-1860, and as a representative of the Confederate States in England. While he and James M. Mason were travelling to England to serve as the Confederate Ambassadors, they were captured by the Union ship Trent while on board a neutral British ship. This event set off the Trent Affair.
