Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sherman informs Kimmel, possibly a former Civil War soldier from Ohio "I retain my usual good health and the love of Old Comrades." Declares "As to the sending a copy of my memoirs 2nd Ed. I am sure that you labor under the Common impression that the author owns the book. Not so, it is the publisher, a Copy of my own memoirs costs me within 50 cts the same as you or any purchaser." States that the price of the memoirs is $5, and provides publisher information for Kimmel in case he would like to order the memoirs directly from the publisher.

Sherman died a few days later on 14 February 1891.
