Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanking children (apparently disabled or otherwise disadvantaged) for a drawing they sent at Christmas time. He explains to them that even though they are different from other children, they must learn the lessons of life to obtain "higher places." Their present conditions will not matter in the next life because "all imperfect bodies will be made like unto His glorious body."
