Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A partial reproduction of a statement by von Braun that originally appeared in an article contained in "This Week Magazine," included with the Charlotte Observer issue of July 18, 1965. The statement was from a interview discussing the relationship between science and religion, in which von Braun sees the two as compatible. von Braun states that the destructive forces unleashed by modern science have led people to return to religion for a means to control this awesome power. Signed and dated for inclusion with Bishop Earl Hunt's autograph collection.
