At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on half-sheet of paper. Contains a request from Thomas Fitzpatrick to the Secretary of War. Fitzpatrick writes, "I am a native of Ireland and a subject of Great Britain. My trade is house-painting, and I am not only out of employment, and unable to obtain any, but am absolutely destitute of means and money, without a shelter to stay in. I earnestly and respectfully ask that I may be permitted to leave the Confederate lines by land." Campbell, Assistant Confederate Secretary of War, endorses on verso. Captain [R. L. Hardy?] also signs on verso, noting that Fitzpatrick is not liable for conscription.

My work is house painting and I am not only out of employment and unable to obtain any but am absolutely destitute of means and money, without a shelter to stay in. Endorsement on verso : An Irishman unable to make a living here and wants to leave refer to Gen. Winder (Provost Marshal of Richmond) for examination by order J.A. Campbell, Assistant Secretary of War, January 28, 1864. Also endorsed: Engineer Office, Richmond, February 3, 1864, this party has been examined and found not liable to conscription. R.L.
