Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

" The Depts. of the Ohio & the Missouri should be under one Genl. Head. If not, all south of the Cumberland River should be added to this Dept. If I can have the Genl. charge of the two, I would leave [strikeout] Genl. Buell in the particular command of his present Dept. & army. The Dept. of Kansas has less connexion with present operations, & could be left as it is."
