Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes "When asked what trait of Abraham Lincoln's character most impressed me in the years of my intercourse with him, I reply - his wisdom. He was the wisest man I ever knew."

Brooks was a California reporter who had followed Lincoln's rise to the Presidency. He was to be appointed Lincoln's personal secretary in the spring of 1865, but the assassination intervened.
