Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Weed, a journalist active in politics, writes to Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune. Comments that Henry Wilson "ought to be at the Free Soil State Convention," to be held in Syracuse, New York.

Wilson was owner and editor of the "Boston Republican" 1848-1851, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts 1853-1872, and U.S. Vice President 1873-1875.
