Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Responds favorably to receiving a letter from Governor Snyder about the resolutions passed by the General Assembly of Pennsylvania supporting President Madison's stand against Britain. Describes them as "expected from a state, which, has given, so many proofs of its readiness to maintain the rights and honor of the nation, against foreign aggressions..."
