Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Testimony stating a conversation the witnesses overheard between Ballantyne and Mr. & Mrs. Peterson. Ballantyne admitted harassing Mrs. Peterson and forcing her to sign a mortgage on the homestead. When told Mrs. Peterson miscarried the same night he harassed her, Ballantyne stated "I do not understand your Danish Language. Get Tourgeson to explain it to me."
