At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"A Visit to Bethel Graveyard" emotionally describes different graves. Brief blurbs including "My Mother's Prayer," "Infidelity," "Prosperity and Adversity," and "Why the Answer to Prayer is Delayed" are printed. An article titled "Southernism" compares Southern nature to "Northernism." A letter to the editor titled "The Body and the Soul" describes a fast day collection gathering funds for sick soldiers. "No Chaplains" describes a chaplain with the 46th and 48th North Carolina Regiment.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
