At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter to the editor discusses "Apparent Discrepencies in the Scriptures." In "A Soldier's Macedonian Cry," pastors are encouraged to leave their churches and go preach in the battlefield to soldiers. A letter by Chaplain with the 14th South Carolina Volunteers on thanks the paper for improving the religious condition of the regiment. An article titled "Religious Controversy" questions the method of discussing religious topics. Articles examine skepticism ("The Credulity of Scepticism), declension ("National Declension"), prayer ("Prayer"), and baptism ("Design of Baptism"). "Secular News" includes reports from Port Hudson, Vicksburg, and Fredericksburg; the Democratic State Convetntion in Ohio; and international reactions to the death of Stonewall Jackson.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
