An article titled "The Soldier's Trust" describes watching soldiers bid loved ones farewell on their way to battle. The author of a letter "To all S. C. Soldiers" promises to send the paper to any soldier who asks for one. Brief, didactic articles discuss country policy ("The Policy of the Country"), "Sympathy," hindered prayer ("Prayer Hindered"), and "Chaplains." An editorial titled "Southern Presbyterian Review" examines and critiques the Southern Presbyterian Review, another paper. "Secular News" includes riots in New York, movements of General Robert E. Lee, and raids in the West, amongst other items.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
