At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The enemy is reportedly perparing for another advance on Richmond, as they are already to Bottom's bridge, Particulars of the fight at Kinston, North Carolina near Newbern, Confederate raid on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, including destruction of bridges, cavalry fighting, and capture of Brig. - General Scammon, Charleston advises that the fighting there continues.
