Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed twice by Confederate General Alfred E. Jackson at Jonesboro, Tennessee on 20 March 1863. This was signed while Jackson was serving as a brigade commander in the military department of East Tennessee. Published by J.W. Randolph at 121 Main Street, Richmond, Virginia. Marked on title page as "corrected and enlarged with a revised index." Also marked on the same page as "the only correct edition." Has 47 articles with 1536 listed regulations for the army. Pages 407-420 include 101 articles of the Confederate articles of war as well. Index at front. No notes or illustrations throughout. Includes various blank forms for the quartermaster, subsistence, medical, ordnance, corps of engineers, and recruitment departments.
