Thanks Reverend Bentley for his sermon given upon the death of General John Fiske, which Jefferson has just read. Praises Fiske as "a model of merit." Contains Dove watermark. Bentley's sermon, delivered in the East Meeting-House, Salem, Massachusetts, was published in 1797.

Sir

I thank you for the sermon on the death of Gen Fiske, which I have read with pleasure. he appears to have been truly [struck] a model of merit. and the more deserving of praise in as much as his good works being performed in the still walks of private life, were not to be blazoned on the great theatre of the world. What a constrast does a character of so much benevolence hold up to view with that of the Attilas and Bonapartes, the [illegible], sent to scourge kings & nations for their crimes & follies!
Accept the assurance of my great esteem & respect.

Th: Jefferson

The revd. Mr. Bentley
