Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Small photo scrapbook stamped "Photographs" on front cover. Photographs and manuscript narrative pasted on black paper. The pictures depict railroad, wilderness, timber, logging and other scenery. There is a skinned page at the end of the book that appears to be missing a photograph. Some photographs have blue ink transfer from the manuscripts opposite.
