Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Assigning Henry W. Benham as "Chief Engineer of this Department." Order given by McClellan but singed by Marcy.

Randolph B. Marcy was George McClellan's chief of staff, and his father in law.
Henry W. Benham was a Union engineering officer, breveted Major General shortly before the end of the Civil War.
