Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discussing property claims resulting from a bankruptcy. Requesting Hobart's help in making sure he secures the amount of the property he desires. Also discussed a bankruptcy bill that may come up for vote again in Congress soon, and hopes Hobart's vote on the bill is "unbiased by local or partial considerations & influenced only by your conceptions of the probable effect of that measure upon the nation at large."
