Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting Hobart's support for the publication of "The American Farmer" a paper intended to disseminate information about agricultural advances and technology. The paper has been a success so far, but requests Hobart's support in any way possible.

John S. Skinner published "American Farmer" and numerous other agriculture related periodicals. He also served in various government posts, including postmaster of Baltimore.
