Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Majors, notable Western pioneer and originator of the Pony Express, confirms receipt of sugar and molasses. States that the supplies were delivered to him on order from Major General Stewart Van Vliet, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Fort Butler, New Mexico, is written on this document, possibly indicating that the supplies are to be sent there.
