Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the battle of Port Hudson: "Our works [19 gun battery] are 330 yards from the rebel's principal works." Writes of their improved situation: "A week ago I gave up hope, now I'm sanguine of the result." Written on the back of a blank Confederate imprint to purchase government lands.
