Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the Yankees have not yet made an atack against Mobile. Living in fear of an attack. Remarks that others have felt the effects of "Yankee clemency" by which Union troops stripped the home of food and all possessions. In part: "And this war they say they wage to restore the Union...."
