Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks him for sending a Spanish merino ram. Discusses problems with breeding because the ram does not seem interested in the ewes. Describes his sheep pasture and thanks Mease for his advice. Comments on his desire to breed for merino wool on a Barbary carcase.

Pinckney was a signer of the Constitution from South Carolina.
