Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks her if she liked the "old homestead of [his] ancestors." He informs her that he passed most of his childhood there and goes on to describe the beauty of the land. Advises her to get Tom to accompany her to Newman's Hill from which she "can see Greenwood & Capt. Ward's with the country intervening." Writes that the office has been closed temporarily because Colonel Deas is acting as Assistant Secretary of War. He writes that he is staying with Cousin James. He also writes that General Raymond and his wife are also staying with Cousin James because they have rented their house away temporarily. Expects that he will stay with John Slaughter the following month but is not certain. Wonders whether Mr. Morton really sold his farm for 50,000 dollars to Sterns, a distiller.
