Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of two gentlemen talking one of which has a large horn held to his ear. The caption reads "Deaf Man- I have got the Secession Fever, and it is making me deaf. Union Man- Get some of Magee's Union Envelopes, and that will cure you of the fever."
