Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of three men one holding two sheets of papers one whisch say Southern Bonds, the other says Jeff Davis $20,000. The caption reads, "These bonds will nerver do, my frend, For Johnny Bull has said it. Go home, and meditate your end, your thieving friends have d____d your credit."
