Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Weeks' father, Thomas, inquires about the condition of John after the battle of Perryville. He writes: "so please answer and oblige a fraternal brother." Also included is a response from C.L. Hozl on behalf of Lt. Holden. He writes that John was fine when leaving Perryville, but Lt. Holden has suffered a bad wound in his right arm and is currently in the hospital
