Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gives instructions for distributing the objects he will be express mailing to her. Instructs her to keep the novels and to read the other books he's sending. Asks his sister to give the other things to his mother for preservation. Writes that the canteen he's sending was picked in Pea Ridge and the cup was carried from Rolla.
