Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he dreads reading the list of the dead and wounded of his regiment. Reports that Colonel Bonneville has issued an order to call back all absentees for duty. Hopes to be exchanged soon. Includes a letter regarding the cost of supplies to sustain an army and asks that the writing be preserved in his journal back home. Reports that four steamboats were burned at the levee and are said to have been set afire with the intentions of burning some gunboats in between them. Reports in a postscript note that Brigadier General Lytle was killed in battle on September 22nd.
