Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Oviat's "Diary" with printed titlepage, and short entries concerning drilling, telegrams received, etc. The entries appear to have been copied, as noted on the titlepage "Edited by Joseph Fitzgerald, 1st Lt. Co. 9, USC Artillery (heavy)." Topics include Lincoln's assassination, daily life, etc. Written in a Clayton's quarto diary, with many blank pages in the latter half of 1865.
