Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Endorsement on letter to Sherman from Eads. Apparently written after 1-27-1875. Sherman comments on a letter from Eads on deepening the entrance to the Mississippi River by Jetties; "He has shown the ability to finish anything he undertakes." AES on page 4 of letter, written in pencil. The letter written in purple ink. Sherman forwards to Senator (John) Sherman.
