At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To "A Full power authorizing Mr. Norman B. Judd, to negotiate a convention, with the Gov't. of Prussia, on the subject of the rights of neutrals & belligerents in time of war." Judd, a Chicago attorney, was closely involved in Lincoln's election to the presidency. Judd expected a cabinet position but was instead appointed Minister to Prussia, a post he held until 1865.

I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Full Power authorizing Mr. Norman B. Judd, to negotiate a Convention, with the Govt. of Prussia, on the subject of the rights of neutral & belligerents in time of war. dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant.
