At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Oil on canvas, unstretched, of older Union soldier, with white hair and a mustache, seated on the ground in a despairing pose, holding his hand to his forehead, near a rifle. Signed at lower right "J. E. McCasky [or McCosky], NY / Libby Prison / May [?] 1863." The soldier is silhouetted behind the unpainted background.
