Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Illustrated publication advertisement for a recently published book about Lewis experience as a captive of Chief Black Hawk during the Black Hawk War. Published in the aftermath of the war after Black Hawk was taken as a captive on a tour for the United States. The advertisement refers to the tour. An unrelated poem is printed on verso: "The Factor's Garland, or The Turkish Lady." Date inferred from the publication year of Lewis' narrative.
