Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he deeply regrets not having gone to the theatre with President Lincoln as he was asked to. Also feels that his habit of constant vigilance may have prevented Lincoln's murder. States that he will give a speech on President Lincoln in Chicago and will go to Springfield with the remains of the president.
