Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

On the front page there is a sketch of a Hawkins' Zouave with a long, stretched out neck. He writes that that he was hired to drive a wagon and deliver goods uptown for [illegible] but looks like Duncan's Sons for $8 a week. Also, he says Mr. Stewart gives his regards to Richard.
