Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother about his general well-being. Inquires as to Harold's whereabouts. Includes a Christmas list and instructions for mailing care packages. Written on a YMCA aerogramme. An aerogramme consists of a blank sheet of paper with folding instructions and adhesive flaps that becomes its own envelope, and carries prepaid postage at the international airmail letter rate.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
