Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his mother he is still healthy and getting increasingly busy. Discusses the local conditions and reports having seen friends from home. Wonders why he hasn't received any mail. Written on a YMCA aerogramme. An aerogramme consists of a blank sheet of paper with folding instructions and adhesive flaps that becomes its own envelope, and carries prepaid postage at the international airmail letter rate.

Private Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
