Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter to Ord discussing his post-war [Reconstruction] duties, the size and deployment of the post-war army: "Grant is fully aware of the tendencies of Bureaucracy and will on his own quiet way work at the Solution. I think Congress will leave to him to say how many men he needs to compose the Regular army..." "Headquarters Military Division of the Missouri " letterhead. With note stating, "St. Louis Mo, Private Letters (3) from Genl. Sherman in Feby. and March 1867." This note could pertain to GLC08012.04-.07.
