At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the recent engagement of Hutson to his daughter, Emmeline Colcock. Says he will be very sad to see his daughter go because she has been a great help with her younger siblings since her mother died. He consents to the marriage and has confidence and trust in Hutson. He opens his house to him, and gives love to Hutson's family. Emmeline Colcock died late in 1861 before she and Hutson were married. Their engagement is also discussed in GLC08165.28 and GLC08165.30.
