At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes he would love for her to write to him at camp. States her brothers Cornelius and William are lucky because they can visit home while serving which he cannot do stationed in Virginia. Talks about getting accustomed to the "barbarous" lifestyle and hopes he will not be unrefined when he returns. Reports that Thomas Grimke Rhett has been made Adjutant of the regiment. Remarks that the war is at a standstill and that most hope it will end soon. The government will not give their regiment anything to do. Gives his love to many family members. Hutson was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War. Mary Anna Colcock is the sister of Emmeline Colcock, whom Charles was engaged to before she died in 1861. Mary Anna later became his sister-in-law when he married Theodora Colcock.
