Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Setting up the orders of the day for the 1st New York Fire Zouaves. Gives orders about breakfast and duties. States a police guard should be posted at 5 o'clock and allow no one to pass. Charges the quartermaster with inspecting the guns, and orders captains to hand in a roll of their commands by 9 o'clock. Ellsworth organized the NY Fire Zouaves from volunteer NY firefighters. He was killed on 24 May 1861 and was the first well known individual to die in the Civil War.
