Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chairman of the New Brunswick (NJ) Committee of Safety writes to naval hero Samuel Tucker of scarcity and hardship: "The call by the militia, for ammunition so great, that I have under the necessity of sending power to Amboy... Leed has also been a scarce article, for what of which, our people have taken from the windows of the Houses..."
