Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"I am now determined to go ahead upon the forts at Mobile, I am only held by the Courts & Boards of examination but will never be in any better condition for the attack than at present, for they are taking away my officers every mail & I will soon be paralyzed for want of officers to govern the vessels.
