Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First edition inscribed, but not signed, by "the author" on free front endpaper. Inscription dated January 7, 1894. Published by Everett Waddey, Richmond, Virginia.

Preliminary research suggests that Blair was a Virginian who served in the Confederate army, but subsequently argued in favor of African-American rights. As a free-trade advocate, his primary rhetorical method was to appeal to the economic interests of whites.
