Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notification that Beardsley has "been Drafted as a Member of the Active Militia of this State." Says the law gives him five days "to make your excuse to the Selectmen," in accordance with a law passed 3 July 1861. Signed by selectmen Otis Beers, S.P. Curtis and D.B. Booth.
